Mission Falls Ranch

- Joan Mason
Some call it the middle of nowhere. We call it the center of our world.
Sustainable Agriculture in Rural Montana
Mission Falls Ranch is a family-owned business that has been operating in the Mission Valley for two generations and hopefully many more. Our goal is to create a sustainable cattle farm through regenerative agriculture and silvopasture and restore the damaged riparian habitat along our section of the Mission Creek.

Pasture-raised Beef
We have been growing our Mini-Hereford/Aubrac commercial cattle herd for the past three years. Mini-Hereford and Aberdeen breeds are well known for their higher ratio of prime cuts to less desirable cuts per animal, quicker finishing times, and lower environmental impact. Aubrac cattle originate from France and are known to be a hardy, maternal breed with excellent capacity to adapt to climate variations and the forage available. Our target goal is a herd of about 20 cows, each producing one calf per year. Weaned calves may be sold locally in the Fall or carried through the following year for sale as grass-finished beef. We sell by the quarter, half, or whole to individual consumers through our local butcher, D & J Meats.

U-Pick Garden
We are currently developing a ‘U-Pick’ orchard/garden at the front of our property. The area has been a family apple orchard for over 80 years and has been the location of many neighborhood cider squeezing parties. Now, the 2-acre orchard has been enclosed in a deer-proof/bear-proof fence so we can expand to include multiple varieties of vegetables, fruit, and flowers. We also utilize the grazing areas of the enclosure for our field pigs and lambs. Our future orchard will be designed to function as both a garden and as a space for teaching classes and hosting events. In addition to our ‘U-Pick’ garden, we have a greenhouse and several outdoor gardens along the hillside and in the duck yard where we grow vegetables, pumpkins, squash, rhubarb, and raspberries.

Pasture-raised Pork
We believe in happy pigs! Our locally-sourced, pasture-raised Kune-Kune/Idaho Field pigs love foraging in our apple orchard all summer. They also do a great job "cleaning up" our pumpkin patch and leftover squash. Pasture pigs live their best life out in the grass and sun, but they also make some tasty bacon.

Fresh Farm Eggs
Fresh eggs collected daily from our free-range chickens. Happy chickens make the best tasting eggs! Our chickens enjoy premium chicken feed, extra mealworms, and free range forage around our yard and fields.

Pasture-raised Lamb
Our locally-sourced lambs are pasture raised with free access to grass in the summer and hay in the winter.

Farm Stay Cabin
Come stay a night beside the iconic Mission Creek. Sleep to the soft sounds of moving water, inside our gorgeous hand built, single-room wood cabin.
Registered Working Border Collies
The philosophy of Mission Falls Ranch is also that we breed 'like to like'... sire and dam that are similar in temperament level and drive level. We can then predict with a fair amount of accuracy that the pups will all be the same. You can close your eyes and pick a good one out of a litter. Breeding a shy dog to a bold dog does not make for middle of the road temperament... it makes for a litter of some of each (this is what Joan learned after decades of breeding). The colors, the coats, or the ears, are just 'frosting on the cake' and we don't breed for that. It is what is under the hood that is the most important.
